The Modern Way of Living: What’s it Doing to our Kids?

We love to snuggle with our cell phones and laptops in bed and so do our children. It is such a convenience to answer your emails and watch a movie in bed, but have you ever thought what it is doing to us and our children. I am not only talking about the blue light, but the various other health risks that originate from the parasitic screen devices. In this article, we will look at the various cons of living with the screen-based devices.

General impacts of sedentary lifestyle on children

The diagram below shows the various side effects of letting children play with electronic devices for longer periods.
Here are some of the statistics from various researches to help you understand the damaging effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Physically inactive people have a higher risk of developing breast and colon cancer. A study showed that there was a 40% decreased chance of cancer in those who regularly exercise as compared to those who lived an inactive lifestyle.
  • According to a study, physical activity put offs insulin resistance, which is the major cause of type 2 diabetes. According to a recent study, people who watch at least 2 hours of TV a day have 14 % higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • With regular physical activity you can reduce the risk of cognitive instability and decline. A research study shows that regular exercise can reduce up to 50% of dementia risk in the later stages of life.
  • The regular exercise regimen reduces the risk of child stress. Research shows that children who engage more with commercial playground equipment and other similar play structures have reduced child stress.
  • 730,000 people suffer from stroke annually. Research has shown that children who stay active from the very beginning have decreased chances of stroke.
  • Sedentary lifestyle leads to loss of muscle tissue that in the long run leads to the loss of muscular strength that is needed to perform the essential daily activities.
  • Bones and muscles require regular exercise to maintain their strength. Children who do not engage in regular exercise suffer from bone loss, which in the long run causes substantial damage to the physical health.
  • Children with less physical lifestyle are more depressed than other children who regularly engage with outdoor playground equipment.
  • Children who do not engage in structured and unstructured activities have a 20% chance of gaining excess fat as compared to those who regularly engage in physical activity.
  • Children who exercise on a regular basis have a stronger immune system that keeps the various diseases at bay.
The above statistics show the worst effects of a sedentary lifestyle and the modern living. Think about it; is it not possible to raise kids without introducing them to the technological devices? Is your child’s health worth the risk? Try to find a balance between activities so that your child does not suffer from fatal diseases. It might be challenging at first if your child is already addicted to his smart phone, but it is not impossible.
